Wireless
Networking FAQ
This document addresses frequently-asked-questions about wireless
networking.
Although wireless
technology has existed for some time, only recently has the industry
developed and adapted new standards which work quickly and reliably.
The advantages of wireless are numerous,
and easy to implement or integrate into any existing system.
Q) Why
would I want a Wireless Network?
A) Use a wireless network in
your home to:
- Share Internet access,
printers and hard drives
- Download music and
video to shared devices
- Communicate with the
family
- Play games on your
network
- Synchronize devices
such as Cameras and PDAs without any physical connection
Use a wireless network at
your place of business to:
- Allow users or guests
to connect to the internet
- Permit wireless
synchronization between devices such as laptops, desktops and PDAs
- Share printers, files
and resources without connecting them
- Communicate with
coworkers or associates
The features of a
wireless
network can make life easier and
save you money.
Q) How far can my
devices be from the wireless access point?
A) Under typical indoor conditions,
the signal range is between 300-500ft. Outdoors, communication usually
ranges between 1500-1800ft.
Q) What is the fastest
transfer rate of a wireless network?
A) The 802.11g standard allows for
transmission rates of up to 54Mbps. Most new equipment features speed
boosting technology which can push this much closer to traditional
wired rates.
Q) What
is the cost of a wireless vs. wired network?
A) Although a wireless
network is more expensive, the difference is marginal and
almost trivial when compared to the benefits it offers. Please contact
us for exact pricing information.
Q) How many devices
can I connect to my Wireless Network?
A) As many as you want! Depending on
the exact configuration of your hardware and software, of course.
